Gaze
|
|
This picture was taken in Penarth Bay, Wales one cold, windy afternoon and despite the harsh weather, this little girl could be seen eating an icecream. What struck me was that her long gaze into the distance made her look old and ancient, not fitting her young age.

Accident
|
|
My brother was involved in a car accident a few weeks back, badly injuring his right hand. The picture above is his hand after three surgeries - one for debridement (cleaning), one for a drain insertion to remove pus, and the third for a skin graft.
He is otherwise okay at the moment, but his right hand is extremely stiff which is a pity as it puts a temporary pause to his career in dentistry (he graduated only several months ago).
Praying all will go well with him.
PS
on a sidenote, the picture above was taken with the 50mm stopped down to F7.1, ISO 100 with bounced flash.

Messy Hair

Again a picture of Aida and Fazuan's cute little Safiya. I love the anime-like messy hair!

Bath Time
|
|
This was taken on new year's eve of my friends Fazuan and Aida's two children at bath time. It was a somewhat lucky shot as at that exact moment Emyr and Safiya were just doing the right pose, and their mother Aida was not in the picture.
My own criticisms of the picture are:
1. Having taken under tungsten light and with flash, the picture is much too warm, spoiling the original colours. Try as I might with Adobe Photoshop Elements, I am unable to restore the original colours. So mental note for me, either; (a) shoot in RAW mode (b) make sure the white balance is right.
2. Having used the 50mm prime at 1.8, the shallow depth of field made Safiya (on the left) blurry. I should have used a smaller aperture.

Foggy Coventry
|
|
It has been terribly foggy in the UK for the past 3 days, especially in the Midlands. The visibility is poor; limited to around 5-10 metres at times. I had been oncall as well the past one week, often finishing work at around 10 pm. Imagine my horror driving on the motorway on a dark, foggy night. To make matters worse, the temperature was also very cold and the roads became slippery with ice.
The fog is so blinding, that domestic flights from and to Heathrow airport has been all but grounded. We were horrified as my brother was supposed to fly back to Malaysia this weekend!
Despite the ordeal, there's always a positive - photography opportunities! These pictures were taken tonight, only a few hours ago at dawn before the sky lost its colour in darkness. I used the smallest ISO I could on the 400D (ISO 100) and small apertures too - 16 to 25 to get sharpness from fore- to background. The bonus was that it forced long shutter speeds getting nice streaks of lights of the traffic passing by the Blue Ribbon, in Coventry.
I hope the fog will lift soon so that my brother could fly back home.
PS
I haven't been terribly active on Fotopages and if I'm honest, the reason I'm not updating the page more often is that: I really feel inferior compared to all the pros here!

My new toy: 50mm Prime
|
|
heh heh heh, I am very pleased to receive a new lens today, my second one after the 18-55mm F "whatever". Most people have been recommending the EF 50mm 1.8, as for only £60 including postage and packaging, the EF 50mm has good optical quality and is extremely fast considering the relatively cheap price.
Can't wait to experiment. Cheers!

Cooling Towers
|
|
|
Terribly sorry for my long inactivity in the Fotopages-sphere. I am actually currently doing a week long night oncalls and thank goodness tonight has been quite quiet leading to this update opportunity.
Anyway, this is a picture taken several weeks back in Nottingham, England. It was a beautiful sunny autumn day with blue skies and yours truly together with my friends Exdua & Rosli Othman were out for a photographic adventure. We've been eyeing these cooling towers for months and thanks to the good weather & graciousness of our host to drive, were finally able to capture pictures of these giant monoliths.
Apparently the emissions you could see from those towers are water vapour; a by product of energy production from coal. These towers are HUGE and could be seen from miles. In the picture you could see how small those electricity poles look in comparison.
Keep on shooting everyone.

Borakphoto Assignment Completed: "Culture"
|
|
Culture is defined as a system of shared beliefs, customs and behaviours shared by a society and that are transmitted from one generation to another through learning. Our Malaysian culture is indeed extremely rich and one of them is: we eat with our fingers.
The Western society would definitely frown, but unbeknownst to them; our food tastes best when eaten with our fingers. There's that special tactile feedback that is lost when one uses metal utensils such as a fork and spoon.
There is an art and custom to eating with fingers; only the right hand is used and only the first three digits are normally dirtied.
Eating with your fingers is a cultural experience everyone should experience while visiting Malaysia.

Fotopages Oxford Meet
|
|
Oh no, I'm well behind posting up pictures on my FP. However, since Alynn has already posted up her version of our Oxford Fotopages Meet on both Borakphoto and her own FP, I guess it's our turn now, right Arep?
As you guys may have already known, Arep & Dina, Alynn, Kaoru, Amer, Fakhrul and yours truly and my family - all Fotopages members - have arranged for a photography meet up in Oxford where Alynn & friends are currently studying architecture.
It was absolutely a fun meet up, where I finally got the chance to meet the personalities behind the talented pictures found on their respective pages. I have posted many pictures on my blog & my Picasa Web Album, so here are some variations of the same pictures:
My 3 year old Sarah and 1 year old Amar rolling on the grass.
Arep and Dina, my neighbours - but we met thanks to Alynn, photography and Fotopages.
Dina, framed by Autumn leaves.
Amar doing his version of Lorentz Law
I'm seeing red
I get vertigo seeing this picture of Sarah throwing leaves towards the camera.
Amar is such a ladies' man
Arep concentrating hard to compose his shot.
