Coventry University

After doing prolonged oncalls I always make it a point to go out and get fresh air and today was no different, in fact I insisted for an outing despite my youngest being unwell!

Today's set comes from our outing this evening in front of the building titled by today's entry. For these pictures I used a circular polariser and - please believe me - minimal editing, except for cropping and for some, sharpening, in Picasa 2. I wish I had more time to Photoshop these pictures and maybe I will in the future - but I it's late and I'm working tomorrow.

If you guys want to know how the skies look so blue and saturated in these pictures the secret today is: I used the "Landscape" setting under the Picture Styles option on my 400D (thanks Madhu for giving me the inspiration this time: circular polarizer + "Landscape" setting = Gold).

Our playground today was Coventry University. It was an exceptionally blue skied day - despite the strong winds and rain the past few days!

The picture of this *insert name whoever knows* flower was taken from one of the flower beds in front of the University. I like the faint imprints of the *Insert name* leaves blurred in the background.

Leading lines by the bridge pointing towards the University, and a person walking into view to give a sense of scale. Not fully satisfied with the editing in Picasa2 of this picture. I'll post the Photoshopped version in the future - probably.

Another undetermined flower decorating the University. Playing with depth of field and motion blur is a cinch with the 24-105mm F4L IS lens.

Two students crossing each others' paths in this patiently timed and anticipated shot.

I was thinking of Travis' song "Why does it always rain on me?" when asking Puan Mama Sarah and Amar to position themselves for this shot of a single cloud formation.

Family portrait minus yours truly. Pity Amar was walking quickly towards the camera, thus blurred in this photo.

That's all folks, hope you've enjoyed today's set.

the sky was indeed blue with the CP and the buildings were great. nice pics.

as for the flowers, a macro will give more detail. SP90? or 60mm macro.

i love all of them but i must say that picture no 5 is my favourite. i just love candid shots, like when the 2 students were crossing each others' paths. nice shots!

p/s: thanks for leaving a comment on my blog and ive replied it there. my dad is good at taking pictures of buildings and potraits but as for me, i prefer to take candid shots, like when people are laughing, having a good time or even hard time. it tends to get blurry but when its not, its such a satisfaction. if you could see the last picture in the Yasmin Mustapha Kamil's entry, i wanted to snap that shot when she was still standing in the middle but unfortuantely, she was moving towards me at the time so she ended up being kat tepi. thank god she was still laughing! it's not a perfect shot but i still like it as i can still feel her laughter every time i see it. btw, i suck at photoshopping so got a lot to learn!

admire your fotopage. keep it up!

ikelah - hey thanks man. i don't really get to use the CP much due to the rainy & bleak weather normally here in britain, but on the odd sunny days that i do - the pictures turn out great. Madhu is my friend here in this hospital - an anaesthetist - and he's also very much into photography, and he reminded me recently the benefits of using a CPL. now, i don't leave home without it. regarding macro photography - sorry lah ikelah, as of yet, i am not that interested in macro photography. My next lens will be the EF-S 10-22mm. can't wait!

syahirah
hey thanks. I very222 rarely ask my subjects to pose, and I like taking candids more too but in my experience, it is not only the composition and exposure - it is also finding those "moments" where everything in the scene arranges themselves that make a more interesting photo.

i agree - the photos on your blog really captures everyone's high spirits. and that's one of the reasons why we take these photos - to remind us of people we care about.

Princess' 7th Birthday

I am currently busy on a weekend nights oncall, 44 miles away from home. Back in Coventry, the family was busy celebrating Kakak Princess' 7th birthday. The following pictures were all taken by Puan Mama Sarah at the birthday party.

Kakak Sarah and her birthday cake. Count the 7 candles.

Kakak Princess with our Sarah. The theme of the birthday party was "pirates and princesses".

Our Amar with Kakak Princess.

The photo above is my favourite! According to Puan Mama Sarah, the children were playing "princess says" and the previously shy Amar laughed as he joined the crowd.

Good times.

[ikelah] not good their enjoying themselves without me, while i'm busy staying up nights!

[ciku_nunu] she has very deep eyes

puan mama sarah has a different eye than me at capturing these moments - but i really appreciate her angles/ planning/ approach compared to mine. i'm quite lucky that puan mama sarah is really into photography & photoshop just like me and I would really like buy her her own DSLR if i could afford it. insya allah for our anniversary/her birthday soon.

This photo is really beautiful. So sharp and so rich in colours. Great work mynn Mon 28-May-2007 18:17

[red] i did ask puan mama sarah to remove the plastic bag before i took the shot, instead she tried to hide it.

[madhu] hey, thanks man. the sharpness and colours are probably thanks to photoshop - haha.

Sunset Portraits

Pictures of Puan Mama Sarah and my son Amar taken late evening, yesterday. Photographers have always rejoiced in early morning/late evening when light has a warm, soft quality - apparently.

400D - 80mm - F4 - 1/30 - ISO 400

Care to comment?

National Sea Life, Birmingham

[alynn] yeah definitely, i've settled with the name Taka-Arashi or Arashi for short. regarding monday - i finish work on monday morning itself and may be a bit sleep deprived. However, i normally try not to sleep afterwards and if puan mama sarah is willing to drive I would love to make it to Oxford. So insya allah - i'll try.

[Za] here's one hoping your wish will come true

[mamantaro] yup, Canon all the way. don't get me started!

[doubleukayes] the Canals around the aquarium was interesting, however for the sea-life centre itself i think the one in Singapore is MUCHHHHH better and bigger.

[ikelah] peter pan????? i wonder what you mean. you know what Ikelah, i wish i could have used flash and polarizer but sadly (i) flash was banned most of the places (ii) the place was very dark. despite my max. aperture of F4 and ISO of 1600 (yup, most of the picture up there was ISO 1600) the fastest shutter speed i could get was only around 1/15. so i had to wait for moments when the fish/creatures were still for sharp-ish pictures. I had to ask puan mama sarah to stay very still too. That's why the turtle seen just beyond her fingertips was blurred, despite swimming relatively slowly. i would have liked to use a polarizer to control the reflections behind glass, alas, the low light wouldn't let me.

the pictures were great if they were taken at ISO1600 ant at 1/15 sec. and the kuda laut were pretty sharp.

the pose that mama sarah displayed was just like in the peter pan movie if i had not mistaken when he played with his shadow, his fingers were in similar position as mama sarah.

ah, i see what you mean by peter pan now ikelah. you're kinda right. yup, the indoor photos were all ISO 1600 shutter speed 1/15, and i waaaaaaaaaaaaited for the sea horses to stay still before pressing the shutter (very difficult).

okay i cheated - i used neat image as well!

[doubleukayes] seriously thanks for your lesson on Bulb mode, must try it in the future.

[boogey] hahaha, that last picture was taken by Puan Mama Sarah using our old Sony 3mpx point and shoot - dang it. I do wish PMS has her own DSLR - it'd be interesting to see her perspective on things. i bet she'd be quite good. and it's great that the wife is interested in the same hobby - rare to find such a thing huh?

[ikelah] i'm thinking a D80 with an 18-200 VR (if i could find one) actually - it'd make a good anniversary/birthday present for her and who knows? with such a versatile lens even I may change preference to Nikon.

[ ezdy] seriously, thanks for voting the B&W pictures. it's encouraging me to think about capturing monochrome in the future. i agree with the nostalgia factor. You're right about blue-eyed models: they make GREAT portraits as the eyes conveys so much more. note to self: must find more blue-eyed, blonde friends willing for photos (while i still can!).

[HR] you voted pictures taken by Puan Mama Sarah! i'm quite encouraged by the fact that many people are liking the B&W plus grain photos.

[fauzi] thanks for leaving a comment here, your FP is excellent yourself. heh heh, it's great that there are quite a few Canon users here: HR, Ezdy, Rosli, Fauzi, Apex, Oblind - we must stick together!

Barbeque at Rutland Waters

Picture 1: Dawn and Amy

Picture 2: Abishek

Picture 3: Amy

Picture 4: Enjoying the food

Picture 5: Suboohi

Picture 6: The Rutland Water Church

For the full story of the barbeque with my colleagues from work at Rutland Waters, please read my blog: http://itchiness.blogspot.com. Here, I am going to post up pictures I'd Photoshopped and edited to satisfaction. I'll update the post as soon as I edit more.

wow mynn these are great photos. i particularly likes the 3rd one.
re: my fren (mun) uses D40. unfortunately it doesnt use the same battery as D50. oh well what to do?

ikelah - to be honest, previously I was one who likes to photograph sceneries and architecture too. That was until Puan Mama Sarah borrowed me this book on wedding photography from the library. There's nothing like capturing an emotive portrait or a great moment.

also, the lighting on the day was very2 poor (overcast day) - it became sunny towards the end of the barbeque but i ran out of battery <- i wrote about this on my blog.

sol
hey, thanks man. i like the 3rd one too - i'd only recently discovered the photographic joys of photographic people with blue eyes - their eyes just turn up so well on photos (sparkly, and deep). However, pity the third picture is not that sharp eh? regarding the batteries - oh, i thought the batteries between nikon cameras are the same - my bad. i also ran out of batteries in the recent photoshoot - but that was after taking more than a thousand photos to fill up a 4GB compact flash card. I'm planning to get a new battery pack (only around 26 pounds here)

the bokeh is just perfect...i'm really new in this field ..next to others, I'm a pygmy in this field (photography). You are doing such a great job in capturing people/portrait...but the last photo is amazing as well .... well composed!
so much to learn from you .. thanks for heading me to your another wonderful world and thanks for sharing....=)
