My First Entry: Borakphoto Black & White Assignment

Assalammualaikum all,
I created this account with fotopages today, just so that I could take part in Borakphoto's weekly assignments. I have been following Borakphoto for a while now but since the latest assignment is open to public, I decided to give it a go.
The picture above is of Dunluce Castle, taken while I was in Northern Ireland, visiting my brother. Originally in colour, I photomanipulated it into Black and White using GIMP (an Open Source Photoshop alternative). I manipulated the curves for contrast and "weave-sharpened" the picture at the end. I also cloned-stamped distracting elements. I'm abit disappointed by how it turned out in black and white as they are no black tones to balance the highlights ... however, I'm pleased by how the textures of the castle and the grass stand out without the disractions of colour.
The second picture is of a family taken at Lake Windermere, Lake District
I'm only started beginning to be interested in photography, and I'm still learning! The picture above was taken with a point-and-shoot 3 megapixel Sony DSC-P camera. (Currently waiting for my DSLR to ship, a Canon 400D).
