A Date in Dubai
|
|
On the way back to Malaysia from the UK, my wife and I celebrated our 7th year anniversary in Dubai. Dubai was much hotter than I anticipated, but is a heaven for photographers especially those interested in architecture. I have many photographs to share from there, and the first one displayed above is of Dubai Creek - apparently a Golf Resort. We took a relaxing boat tour around the Creek, and my favourite picture from the adventure is the one of this beautiful building.

I'm Finally Back!
|
|
Salams everyone. I've finally ended my stay in the UK and I am now in Malaysia - full time! I'm starting to overcome the initial culture-shock and I am beginning to enjoy it here - the open spaces, the nice weather, the lighting is almost always better than the UK and there are so many stuff to photograph!
I've rewarded myself with a new lens recently - a Canon EF-S 10-22mm. No, the photo above was not taken using the new wide-angle lens, but as soon as I start taking good images with the new lens I will absolutely post it here.
I don't yet have constant internet access hence the patchy updates but once I do, you'll know I'll be back here...
till then - take care!

Final Day at KGH
|
|
As some of you know, I am moving permanently back to Malaysia in just 2 short weeks. That has partly been the reason for my slow updates on Fotopages. These were taken on the very last day I worked at KG Hospital.
Go Team Pink! For our last day, our team decided to wear the same colours - pink, mostly as a joke really. Even our consultant was supposed to wear pink but he betrayed us!
The last Journal Club and Goodbye (err, maybe not as we are planning to meet up in town tomorrow)
I have plenty more pictures from our "last" events but I guess everyone is finding it difficult to say goodbye and we keep meeting up for yet more events. Well, I'm not complaining.

Goodbye Auntie Dina
|
|
On her long list of goodbyes, today Sarah had to bid farewell to her beloved Auntie Dina. It saddens us to think what must be going on in Sarah's little head - the fact that it would probably be difficult for her to see the people she'd gotten used to the past few years but we suppose it's part of her growing process.

Goodbye Nursery
|
|
It was extremely difficult sending my daughter Sarah to nursery. It took quite a few months for her to not cry whenever she's being left. Just when she was getting used to going to nursery, she had to say goodbye to her new-found friends as we are all moving back to Malaysia in just a few short weeks. It's such a shame! At least she'll have some photos to remind her of her days in nursery - above is a picture of Sarah with the nursery's owner, Charlotte.

Graduation Photoshoot - continued
|
|
A portrait of the graduate and his wife. Despite doing only minimal tweaking with Photoshop (exposure, contrast, colour, resize and sharpen) the picture is significantly enhanced compared to the original (the photo just pops). More to come - hopefully.

Graduation Photoshoot Part 1
|
|
Salams all. It's been a while since I had last posted any photos here but my love and interest for photography hasn't changed. Yesterday [18/7/2007], I was hired by a PhD student to photograph his graduation at Warwick University. It's my second ever job as a photographer after my first job of photographing a colleague's engagement pictures (he didn't consent for his pictures to be posted here).
It was my first experience photographing a big event in the graduation yesterday and the few words I could sum up the experience are: thrilling, educational, extremely exhausting but ultimately fun.
The proceedings and "moments" happened at such a fast pace, it took a lot of energy to keep up and "be there" when the moments happened. Anyway, here are some of the photos I am most proud of. Please bear in mind that I have not had the time to Photoshop these ones yet - I am still recovering from the whole experience.
The Professors on stage.
This photo captures the stage where the graduates received their awards and certificates. What I like about it are the blue striations behind the lecturers.
Because I do a lot of flash work (what can I say, I love flashing!) nowadays I use manual metering 80-90% of the time. Previously I used to use Aperture Priority exclusively, but nowadays I find manual is the way to go Unfortunately, resizing this picture to 800 pixels using Picasa2 has somewhat blurred this photo which is in need of a bit of sharpening. I will bear that in mind in post-processing.
Exif: 70mm - F4 - 1/60 - ISO 800 - No flash - Manual Metering
Also, please note that all these pictures were taken at at least ISO 800 and despite that, I thought picture noise is well controlled. I also used RAW for the photoshoot.
Note: The picture above has now been Unsharp Masked in Photoshop.
Awaiting to be seated
I took this photo behind the stage using the widest end of the 24-105mm F4L IS to show both the professors and the audience. It also demonstrates the size of the audience.
I am attracted by the leading lines provided by the lights on the top half of the frame which seems to be echoed by the triangular-ish pattern produced by the professors' hats on the lower half of the frame. I feel the picture needs a bit of sharpening too.
Exif: 24mm - F4 - 1/50 - ISO 800 - No flash - Manual Metering
A lecturer delivering his speech
This picture highlights what the sea of audience must have looked like to the lecturer giving the speech. The Exif of this picture is exactly the same as the one above, except I used flash to illuminate the audience. It really surprises me what the Speed Light 580 EX coupled with ISO 800 can do - if you look at the picture above you'll see that the audience is in near total darkness!
The procession
In this photo, I intentionally used a very slow shutter speed of 1/5 in order to capture the flow of movement of the graduates as they are receiving their certificates. I slowed down the shutter speed by bumping down the ISO to only 200 and increasing the aperture to F6.3.
Notice that even at 102mm and hand-holding the camera, the Dean and the background still look relatively sharp and if I had time I would have sharpened the picture further in post-processing. That is the beauty of an Image Stabilised lens (and leaning on a rigid support, of course).
Exif: 102mm - F6.3 - 1/5 - ISO 200 - No flash - Manual metering
Thank you for reading! If I have more time I am planning to include more pictures; this time post-processed pictures of the graduate and his family.
